For the propaganda authorities of Third Reich Germany, all expressions that did not reflect the values they advocated were categorized as “degenerate” and exposed to a morbid and indoctrinated public. The meaning of degenerate was molded to suit the ideological objectives of the regime. Although we do not live in an openly totalitarian state that separates what is “worthwhile” from what is not, capitalism, through the consumer society, has taken it upon itself to prioritize what is profitable, turning virtually everything into a product.

Artistic expressions have also suffered from this typification; the world created by social media tends to show perfection and beauty, leaving aside an equally important aspect in our lives: ugliness, asymmetry or precariousness. Just as “degenerate” has been used as a pejorative adjective, we propose using this term to describe everything that was left out because it was considered dangerous, subversive, provocative. Appropriating it and being proud of our rage, our frustrations, our ugliness and all those conditions that make us up and that we hide. This exhibition brings together artists of different techniques and styles who, through their pieces, reflect dissent from the imposed canons, either through their aesthetics or the themes they work on, such as violent graphics, political content, through unpleasant characters or in creations that reflect a dystopian future.
